Psalm 19

The vast of the heavens, the planets, the stars, their size and distance declares the existence of a Creator. Join us in listening as Pastor Rick Miller shares from God’s Word how God speaks and how he makes it plain to all mankind His existence.

The Law of the Lord Is Perfect

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above1 proclaims his handiwork.

2 Day to day pours out speech,and night to night reveals knowledge.

3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.

4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.In them he has set a tent for the sun,

5 which comes out like na bridegroom leaving his chamber,and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.

6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure,enlightening the eyes;

9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;
asweeter also than honey and drippings of bthe honeycomb.

11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

13 Keep back your servant also from hpresumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

The Sixth Commandment prohibits all forms of unlawful killing. Some people, failing to consider the full teaching of the Bible, believe that it prohibits all killing. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.あなたの父と母を敬え。これは、あなたの神、主が賜わる地で、あなたが長く生きるためである。

The fifth commandment affects the way that we act towards people in authority. It shows us that we should respect and obey our parents and other people whom God has put over us. Yet, it also shows us that there is a kind of respect that we should show towards all human beings. It does not matter where someone was born, how much money they have, or what social group they are a part of, we should show them respect. This Christian attitude forbids all prejudice and favoritism.

And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.”
神はこのすべての言葉を語って言われた。2「わたしはあなたの神、主であって、あなたをエジプトの地、奴隷の家から導き出した者である。

The law is useful. It helps non-Christians to see their sin and turn to Christ. It helps us to understand how our societies should live. And it helps us as Christians to live in obedience to God. Today, we will talk about using the law to live as God wants us to live.

Throughout the Bible, we read that the moral law is a delight for Christians, since it helps us to follow our God. However, there are a few verses that seem to say otherwise, like Romans 6:14 and Ephesians 2:14-15. Verses like these have led some people to say that the Ten Commandments should not have impact on how Christians live. If we read these verses in context, however, we can see that they do not teach what some people say they teach. The Romans verse teaches that we are free from the law as a pathway to heaven. The verses in Ephesians teach that we are free from the ceremonial law. These verses do not teach that we are free from the Ten Commandments. Understanding the relationship between the Gospel and the law helps us to live happier, more joyful lives.

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

あなたの父と母を敬え。これは、あなたの神、主が賜わる地で、あなたが長く生きるためである。

The Fifth Commandment is a commandment that affects all of human society. Children learn to respect and obey authority figures at home with their parents. If they fail to learn this useful skill at home, all of society will suffer. It is essential for children to treat their parents with respect. They should speak to them in a respectful manner, act respectfully, speak respectfully, and even think of their parents respectfully. They should obey their parents in everything, except if their parents tell them to do something that is against God’s law. Parents have great responsibility also. They must teach their children to be respectful and to obey, and they must teach their children everything that the children need to know about God’s law and about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day.
Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.
21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.

Learning about the Ten Commandments makes us realize that we cannot keep the Ten Commandments. We see in these standards the holiness of our God, and the depth of our own sin. The Ten Commandments force us to understand that God cannot accept us just as we are. We need to hear of the promise of God concerning the Savior, Jesus Christ, who forgives people of their sins and makes them perfectly acceptable to God.

The third commandment calls us to use the name of God in a way that is honorable and worthy of greatness of God. This is very important when we worship God. We should be very careful whenever we use God’s name, since every use of his name is an act of worship, bringing us into the presence of a holy God. First, in order to use the name of God rightly in worship, we must worship Jesus Christ. God has revealed himself through Jesus, brought us salvation through Jesus, and glorified himself through Christ, and so we must worship through the name of Christ. Second, we must use God’s name properly in public worship, thinking carefully about the words that we say when we sing and to what is going on around us, so that we will be able to worship with reverence. Last, we must be careful to use God’s name properly in private worship, dedicating our entire lives to God’s glory, in order to bring honor to his name.
